b. February 11, 1811, in Pendleton County, Virginia; d. March 20, 1889, in Springfield, Illinois. When Henkle was eighteen, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he learned the trade of carriage making. In 1832, he moved to Springfield, Illinois, and established a carriage manufacturing business. Soon afterwards, he married Jane Dickey and had one child. Following his first wife's death, he married Martha Condell on March 17, 1845, and they had four children. From 1843-1845, he served as the third ward alderman for Springfield, Illinois. He served as a member of the Springfield city council from 1851-1852. When his carriage factory burned in 1855, Henkle moved to Decatur and went into the milling business and the manufacture of paper. Thirteen years later, he returned to Springfield and built a paper mill in Riverton. Henkle retired when his mill burned to the ground.
